Are there gaps and spaces in your smile caused by missing permanent teeth? To restore the beauty and symmetry of your smile, Dr. Peterson will recommend a dental bridge. A dental bridge fills the gap in your smile by replacing the missing teeth. A dental bridge has dental crowns that bond to the teeth on either side of the gap, which are called the abutment teeth. A replacement tooth is then attached in between the dental crowns. Dr. Peterson may place a dental bridge to:
- Restore the functionality and beauty of your smile
- Restore your ability to speak and even chew properly
- Maintain a symmetrical shape for your teeth
- Properly distribute your bite
- Keep your remaining teeth from shifting out of place
The three main kinds of dental bridges are: traditional bridges, cantilever bridges, and Maryland bonded bridges. A traditional dental bridge consists of dental crowns for the abutment teeth with a replacement tooth attached in between. Cantilever dental bridges are used when there is only an abutment tooth one side of the gap. This type of dental bridge is not very common anymore. Maryland bonded bridges are made of replacement teeth and gums supported by a framework. There are wings on either side of the bridge that are bonded to your neighboring teeth.
