If you are missing one or more of your permanent teeth, Dr. Peterson may recommend dentures to restore your smile. A denture is a removable appliance that restores your smile by replacing missing teeth and the surrounding tissues. Donna Peterson DDS offers both complete and partial dentures.
When permanent teeth are missing then complete dentures are used, which can be either conventional or immediate. Conventional dentures are made after any remaining teeth have been removed and the gum tissues have begun to heal. Conventional dentures are ready for placement about eight to twelve weeks after the teeth have been removed. Immediate dentures are prepared in advance, so they are ready to be placed as soon as the teeth are removed. Since bones and the gums shrink when healing, immediate dentures are usually only used as temporary dentures.
Removable partial dentures are used when one or more permanent teeth remain in the upper or lower jaw and is made of replacement teeth attached to a gum-colored base. This is sometimes connected to a metal framework that anchors the denture in your mouth. A precision partial denture has internal attachments instead of clasps that hold the denture in place.
