When Do You Need a Crown?
Not all heroes wear capes, and not all crowns are for royalty. But they do come to the rescue in a variety of situations! Here’s when a dental crown might be the perfect choice for you:
- Cracked, Chipped, or Broken Teeth
Your teeth work hard every day, and occasionally, they run into trouble. A crown can help save and stabilize a damaged tooth, preventing further wear and tear.
- Severe Cavities
When a cavity is too extensive for a regular filling, a dental crown steps in as the stronger alternative. They not only restore the tooth but also keep it intact long-term.
After undergoing a root canal, teeth become more susceptible to breakage. A dental crown provides protection and strength, allowing you to chew and smile worry-free.
- Cosmetic Enhancements
Want to fix discoloration and oddly shaped teeth or achieve a consistent appearance? Crowns are a fabulous way to elevate your smile’s aesthetic appeal.
- Dental Implants
If you’re replacing a missing tooth with a dental implant, the crown is the visible part of the new tooth.
What to Expect During the Dental Crown Process
We aim to make the process as smooth and enjoyable as possible. Here’s what you can expect from start to finish at Donna Peterson DDS in Stockton:
1. Consultation & Assessment
First, we get to know you (and your teeth!) better. During your consultation, we will evaluate the condition of your tooth and discuss whether a crown is the best option for you. We might take X-rays to check the tooth’s roots and surrounding bone.
2. Preparation Day
Once we decide a crown is the best option, the next step is prepping your tooth. The damaged part of your tooth will be gently reshaped to make room for the crown. Don’t worry—we’ll ensure your comfort every step of the way. After prepping, we’ll take an impression of your tooth, which will serve as the blueprint for your custom crown. We can place a temporary crown to protect your tooth while lab technicians craft the permanent crown.
3. Crown Placement
Your custom-made crown will be ready in about two weeks (though some cases allow for same-day crowns!). When you return, we’ll carefully fit and secure the crown permanently onto your tooth. After a few fine-tuning adjustments, you’ll leave our office with a smile that’s ready to shine!
